With its tall, curved windows and limestone façade, the cathedral-like 191 Peachtree Road building stands out among the more modern architecture in Atlanta’s downtown business district. That’s why Lorenc+Yoo jumped at the opportunity to design new canopies for the 15-year-old building, designed by famed architect Philip Johnson.

Standing 55 stories tall, 191 Peachtree houses the regional headquarters for consulting firm Deloitte, the home offices of Cousins Properties and other well-known businesses. Lorenc+Yoo was charged with creating a series of canopies that would allow visitors to easily identify the building, as well as its tenants, shops and restaurants.

The Lorenc+Yoo design team studied the context of the building — its scale, color and classical design — to determine the vision for the canopies. The final design highlights the building’s ornamentation and adds complementary features, such as frosted glass, brass accents and a new “191” emblem. Lantern-like elements bookend the canopies and anchor the cables that hold them in place, while skylights provide an aura of natural light beneath the entranceways.

191 Peachtree’s new canopy signage system is classical yet fresh. It pays homage to Philip Johnson’s monumental building while displaying design hallmarks unique to Lorenc+Yoo.
