Time was when a simple signpost would signal your departure from one state and entrance into another. Over time, government tourist bureaus right off highway exits began to spring up, providing new visitors with maps, historical video presentations and samplings of local fruit or confections.
Today, however, in our era of shrinking government resources and travelers’ seemingly tighter schedules, citizens of many states are trying new approaches to welcoming visitors and passers-through.
The “Welcome to Georgia” project is just that: a creative approach designed to communicate the rich history, resources, and potential of the State of Georgia. And it will do it beautifully, taking design cues from Georgia’s unique styles and forms.
Lorenc+Yoo Design is proud to be a member of the design team for the Welcome to Georgia project. Along with AMEC Environmental & Infrastructure, Inc. and Andrew Crawford Ironworks, Lorenc+Yoo is designing a series of gateway monuments to be placed at the busiest highway entry points into Georgia. Whether coming from Florida, Alabama, Tennessee or South Carolina, visitors will soon see these monumental signs welcoming them into the Peach State.
The Georgia Department of Transportation is funding the project using revenues from blue highway signs sponsored by local restaurants, hotels, gas stations, and other attractions. Speaking to the DOT’s magazine ‘Milepost,’ State Transportation Board Gateway subcommittee chairman Rep. Sam Wellborn said, “I am very excited to see what possibilities are available to improve the appearance of major roadways into Georgia. I want us to make a positive impact on visitors that will leave a lasting impression when people drive across that state line…a wow factor.”
Lorenc+Yoo will share details of the in-progress design later this year. Watch this space for a great new way to appreciate Georgia.
